La Conferencia Internacional sobre Conmociones Cerebrales en el Deporte, celebrada cada cuatro años desde 2001, ha desempeñado un papel fundamental en la configuración del consenso internacional sobre las conmociones cerebrales relacionadas con la actividad deportiva. Sin embargo, debido a la pandemia mundial de COVID-19 —un acontecimiento sin precedentes—, no solo se aplazaron en repetidas ocasiones los Juegos Olímpicos de Tokio 2020, sino también la sexta edición de la conferencia (programada inicialmente para una fecha anterior). Finalmente, la 6.ª Conferencia Internacional sobre Conmociones Cerebrales en el Deporte tuvo lugar en Ámsterdam a finales de octubre de 2022. En julio de 2023 se publicó la Declaración de Ámsterdam, que recoge las conclusiones de dicha conferencia. Este artículo ofrece una visión general del evento, durante el cual se presentaron importantes novedades, incluidas revisiones de la definición de conmoción cerebral relacionada con el deporte, así como la última versión de la herramienta de evaluación de conmociones cerebrales en el deporte (SCAT, por sus siglas en inglés) —conocida como SCAT6—, la herramienta de evaluación en consulta (SCOAT) y el protocolo actualizado de retorno al deporte por etapas.
